Technology

Technology covers the devices, apps and online services people use every day, and the companies and rules behind them. Artificial intelligence gets close attention, from chatbots and image generators to the ways AI is changing work, search and the information we see online. We also cover smartphones, laptops and other gadgets, software and web hosting, social media, cybersecurity and scams, and data privacy, including what companies collect about you and how to control it. Our reporting separates what a product does today from what its makers promise for later. Before we treat a claim as established, we look for independent testing or published research. When we compare products, we use each company's own published prices and features and say plainly what we could not check. When new rules arrive, such as the EU AI Act or data protection laws, we explain what they require and who they apply to. Practical explainers sit alongside the news, showing how to protect your accounts, spot common scams and make sense of new features. For the business side of running a company or a website, such as insurance and contracts, see General. Our editorial policy explains how we pick sources, and every article shows whether it has been fact checked.

Our latest guide covers Cloudways vs Rabbitflare.

Technology: frequently asked questions

What is generative AI?
Generative AI is a type of system that creates new content, such as text, images, audio or code, in response to a prompt. They are trained on large amounts of existing data and learn statistical patterns that let them produce plausible output. That output can contain errors, so anything important needs human review before it is used.
What is two factor authentication (2FA)?
Two factor authentication adds a second step when you sign in, such as a code from an app, a text message or a security key, on top of your password. Even if someone steals your password, they usually cannot get into the account without that second factor, which makes it much harder to break into.
What is the EU AI Act?
The EU AI Act is a European Union law that regulates artificial intelligence according to risk. It bans some uses outright, sets strict requirements for high risk systems, such as those used in hiring or credit decisions, and adds transparency duties for others. Its obligations apply in stages, so businesses should check which ones affect them.
