Business & Industry

Business & Industry covers the companies, equipment and rules that keep the economy running. We explain how industrial products work, from dust collectors and pipe systems to machinery and materials, and what buyers should check before they choose them. We also cover running a business: insurance, contracts and documents, workplace safety, supply chains and trade, and new rules that affect employers. Each article answers a practical question in plain language and links to the primary sources behind it, such as official guidance, published standards and data from regulators. Where a topic depends on the country, we say which rules we describe. Our editorial policy explains how we choose and check sources, and every fix is recorded in our corrections log. Stories about software, web hosting and online security sit in Technology, and cars, vans and vehicle upkeep are covered in Automotive. Nothing in this section is legal, financial or engineering advice, so for decisions with real consequences, speak to a qualified professional. Every article names its author, lists its sources and shows whether it has been fact checked.

Our latest guides cover what is an industrial dust collector and how does it work, what are PE pipe fittings and how do they work and how business insurance protects your company from costly risks.

Business & Industry: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between B2B and B2C?
B2B, or business to business, describes companies that sell products or services to other companies, such as a manufacturer supplying parts to a factory. B2C, or business to consumer, describes selling directly to the public, such as a shop or an online store. Many companies do both, with separate prices and terms for each.
What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is an international standard from the International Organization for Standardization that sets out requirements for a quality management system. Companies of any size can be certified to it by an independent body. Certification shows that a company follows documented processes, but on its own it does not guarantee the quality of a particular product.
What is a supply chain?
A supply chain is the whole network of businesses and steps that turn raw materials into a finished product and deliver it to the customer. It includes suppliers, manufacturers, warehouses, transport companies and retailers. A delay or shortage at any one point can slow down everything that comes after it.
